Many people suffer from neck pain today from sleeping on their neck wrong, lifting incorrectly, or trauma such as an automobile accident. Most everyone understands that for the first 72 hours ice is your best friend. The average person should ice the neck down for 15 minutes at a time and then wait two hours between applications; this helps control pain and inflammation. This may be the only treatment needed if the injury is very minor.
Scar Tissue and The Affect It Has On Your Neck
If you’d suffered a more severe injury where there is more damage to your muscles and ligaments there are other things you can do to heal. With a severe injury the body partially heals with scar tissue. Scar tissue can cause range of motion loss and stiffness that if not treated correctly can lead to chronic pain and arthritis.
Once the pain starts to subside you help minimize the bad effects of scar tissue by gently exercising the neck to try to regain normal motion.
Nutrition’s Role In Healing
Another overlooked area is nutrition. When ligaments and muscles are damaged they need to rebuild. A good multivitamin can help provide your ligaments and muscles the best opportunity to heal. It is a good idea to supplement a multivitamin with extra vitamin C because vitamin C is very important for the soft tissues to rebuild.
